Artist History
****** Nominated Best New Canadian Pop/Adult group for 1999 by Canadian DJ's and Radio Programmers ******* The indie debut CD "Carve a Hole in the Mud" was recorded only a few months after the band formed early in 1998. The music was extremely well received in Canada, achieving rotation (often Heavy) on more than 80 of Canada's biggest radio stations for the first single alone. The debut video for the single "Lately" rotated on MuchMore Music and bulleted onto the Canadian Country Music Television station (it DOES do cross-format music like Garrity) and was played daily throughout the summer and fall of 1999. The duration of the album was highlighted by scores of great club, arena and festival shows throughout Canada. The band is currently recording their highly-anticipated second album and will be released in early summer of 2000. |

Press Reviews
---- From Lynn Saxberg of the Ottawa Citizen ----The free-admission Ex show was openned with a tight set by Ottawa rockers Garrity. In terms of radio exposure, the five-piece band is probably the city's most popular rock act, with two singles from last fall's album "Carve a Hole in the Mud" getting airplay. With a sound characterized by perky melodies, crisp acoustic guitar and funky bass, the band reminded me of the Dave Matthews Band. Front man Mike Easton sings with a similar intensity and sense of earnestness as Matthews. Although the band has completely different instrumentation, they seemed to play with the same impeccable timing as Matthews' jazz-trained crew-------------------------------------------------- From RPM MAGAZINE by Walt Grealis (Music industry Guru and founder of the Juno Awards) ---- Athough this young Ottawa quartet won The Bear’s (106.9FM) Rock Search ’98, Don’t catagorize them as simply rock. Lately, their winning track that won the station’s talent search, is now breaking with A/C stations, and is a perfect example of what these four are about. Very strong on four-part harmony with an unusual melding of acoustic guitar which gives them a folk rock alure not heard enough these days. The vocal experience is ear-refreshing. No pretentiousness here. They have a provocative yet warm delivery that provides the perfect bottom for their song message, all original by the way. Garrity is made up of Michael easton (lead vocals, guitar), Chris Lochner (lead guitar, vocals), Mike Yelle (bass guitar, vocals) and Steve McGrath (Drums, percussion and vocals). The band has been somewhat restricted to the Ottawa area where they have been very successful, thanks to The Bear, but should break out across the country as their single gains strength. Also key is Maybe I do, Find Me Down and Sick and Tired. Left Fielders could be Mingle Mary and Fairy Tales. No MAPL logo or studio information but its safe to assume that all tracks are at least 3 parts Cancon. Produced by Jay Rustin.---------------------------------------------------- Dave Murphy at HMV Indie Nation in Toronto ------Garrity is a four-piece contemporary rock band with a particular emphasis on acoustic guitar. Lead guitarist Chris Lochner plays a significant role in the overall sound of the group. His command of the instrument allows him to fill up the holes that might otherwise be found in a band of this type. A strong rhythm section allows Lochner to take charge of the songs by building each one a strong foundation. The band’s principle song-writer and lead vocalist is Mike Easton. His vocal style is often reminiscent of Blue’s Traveler’s John Popper both in tone and punctuated attack. Overall the band has a very current sound and songs like "Lately" and "Paralysed" prove that they can write. Dave Murphy |
