Artist History
Did you know that there has been found fine examples of abstract art dating back to 70,000 BC. And that the World's oldest artwork has been found on South African coastline
The latest Blombos Cave finds consist of pieces of engraved ochre and finely crafted bone tools. The discoveries by the Cape Field Team led by Dr Chris Henshilwood and supported by the State University of Stony Brook, New York, lend weight to the "African Eve" theory.
This theory holds that all modern humans are descended from a population of early Homo sapiens who lived in Africa between 100 000 and 200 000 years ago. Increasingly there is evidence that this ancestral population lived in southern Africa which has the most consistent archaeological record spanning the transition from archaic Homo sapiens to the modern form. The Western Cape coastline is rich with artefacts that suggest that modern human behaviour emerged in this part of the world.
