Artist History c a t a l y s tWHAT IS CATALYST?Catalyst is a dynamic new rock band from Sydney Australia.WHAT’S THEIR STORY?CATALYST formed in 1995 by Tim Minogue and Alex Vossen. The two of them attended the same high school as Andrew Rugg who they soon recruited a year later as a second guitarist and singer. The first drummer lasted for around eight months before they recruited another who was older and more experienced. Between 1996 and 1997CATALYST built their repertoire, committed to improving their ability to function as a band unit. They played 8-10 gigs during this time, mostly band competitions organised by local youth organisations. With three of the members still underage 1997 continued along a similar path, with more parties and band competitions. Dedicated to regular practising they discarded many of their former songs and began rebuilding, not satisfied with songs that were not perfect, or sounded boring.In early 1998 the band was undergoing difficulties, the inevitable conclusion resulting in the expulsion of the drummer from the band. His unwillingness to experiment led the band to search for someone more creative, their efforts leading to the current drummer; Andrew Savon. On July 19 1998 CATALYST played in their first licensed establishment; Caringbah Business club. ‘Bizzos’ has remained as a firm supporter of the band providing them with regular spots on their Friday and Saturday night Bills.1999 has been a strong year for CATALYST, with song writing and the quality of music being the best it has been to date. The band performs an average of one gig every three weeks and would like to play more. Group Members Name: Andrew RuggAge: 20Instrument: Vocals/guitarExperience: The lead Vocalist and frontman of the band, Andrew has been writing and singing songs for eight years. He began to play guitar and sing at around the same time, and started performing in 1995 with his first rock band. The band lasted for eight months during which times they played at parties and band competitions. Andrew joined c a t a l a y s t in 1996, combining his song writing with Tim’s to create ‘that’ sound. His vocals are powerful and dynamic, sexy and smooth as well as raw and hoarse. His emotion charged songs captivate audiences, his stage presence creating an atmosphere that can be felt.Name: Tim MinogueAge: 20Instrument: GuitarExperience: Played guitar for seven years. He became interested in guitar effects at around the time he began writing. His earliest songs were smothered in glittering ambience which he worked from the pedals on the floor. His fascination with effects has continued, although he stresses that less is more. Today, his interest in the various forms of house music has added a new dimension to his song writing. His guitar playing is easily distinguishable, the sound an unexplainable ‘Tim’ which must be heard to be understood.Name: Andrew SavonAge: 21Instrument: Drums/percussionExperience: Andrew has been playing for ten years, beginning in a classical format for concert bands and other such. Andrew continued in this format for six years before joining his first rock band. The band lasted for around two years year during which they played in venues such as the Iron Duke and the Sandringham Hotel. The band was a metal/punk arrangement which developed Andrew’s skill in this area. His background has allowed for a variety of styles to be chosen from, blending together to create a unique, creative style.Name: Alex VossenAge: 21Instrument: BassExperience: Alex has played bass for around six years. He concentrates his efforts on integrating the bass with the drums, creating a solid rhythm section which is crucial to the band. His bass lines are often the foundation of the song, providing stability in a stylish, non-obtrusive way.
