If there's such a thing as "art rock" anymore, then perhaps Brompton's Cocktail is just that. For those in the know, we're somewhere in-between Faith No More and Mr.Bungle. |

Press Reviews
Edge of Time faves return to the forefront of weird ‘n’ wonderful music with their full length debut release “Take on an empty Mind” (after their self-titled mini CD back in 1998). An aptly titled release because this leaves no room for prejudice or preconceived opinion. This is certainly something that is needed because both lyrically and musically this covers a wide spectrum. The opener “Destroy New York” is bound to start controversy making the link to the 11 September incident obvious but after closer analysis totally out of place. The song was written and recorded a long time prior to the incident and deals lyrically with a person’s obsession with destruction. However the tone is set. The musical and emotional side of the album is surprising. I expected an album with more metallic, upbeat and tongue-in-cheek material like the live favourite “The Adventures of Commodore Impossible”, “The Juggler” or “The Organ Grinder” (which was dropped from the final selection although I have it on the rough mix advance CD)”. Instead the majority of the songs are more lamentuous, tranquil, melancholic, ethereal, even surreal at times. The minimalistic sounding and bare production substantiate this. The diversity of the songs makes comparisons almost impossible especially to those with primarily a metal background. A futile attempt: “Poolside” reminds me of a surreal Faith No More type lament whereas “Ethan in Space” has that Pink Floydian vibe, and “Me Myself Simpatico” sounds like chilling out jazz in a smokey New York cellar-based jazz club. Certainly not for everyone but for those looking for something out of the ordinary then this is well worth the effort.
