Artist History
This collection is from my first public release on SMART RECORDS (now defunct). SMART was part of the 'Intellinet' family, alongside PLUS 8, DEFINTITVE and others. At the time I was doing Sound Design for a number of CD-ROM titles (everything from 'Winnie the Pooh' to 'Rocky and Bullwinkle') and as a diversion I became fascinated with pirate radio. I built a small FM transmitter and purchased an old Ford Ambulance (very used). The idea was to do mobile pirate radio broadcasts from the ambulance (which I dubbed the 'Backpacker') to patrons at various parties around the Detroit area. As the underground scene became more and more popular it was common to have a large number of people congregating outside. The 'Backpacker' and 'Supervillain FM' were designed to provide entertainment for this situation. People could take a break in their cars, tune in to 90.9 fm, and listen to some music while gathering the energy to venture back into the crowded warehouse. Alongside that idea I created a number of signature tracks, (recently rediscovered while going through my archives). These tracks provide a glimpse at styles that began to emerge in my work, up through my recent Video Game work at 'OUTRAGE Entertainment' (mp3.com/autopilot). |

Press Reviews
"Detroit's Backpacker combines freaky fat synths, snippy Electro and deep Techno beats in an amazingly impressive musical display. Backpacker's fun, oddball music is something you might expect to accompany a video game or a trip through a children's museum. Yet there's also a startlingly original and funky element, with tiny subtleties that constantly evolve and take shape. Drawing from the minimalist and Electro camps, Backpacker paints a bizarre old/new Techno world that embraces quirky Techno funk with a sound that's as old as Detroit Techno, yet simultaneously new and fresh thanks to modern production and the mishmash of styles." - LISTEN.COM / Tim P. |
