Press Reviews
As All Die "Time of War and Conflict" CD8/10 - [Crowd Control] I must begin by stating that the layout is utterly awe inspiring with this one. All of the visuals are sepia-toned war photographs over dark brown, textured backgrounds - everything is withered with scratches and dirt. The printing is done on matte paper, thus heightening the experience. Excellent! Musically, I'm not sure what to call this. It's very dark, synth-heavy music with a range of vocals from spoken, to deep singing or whispering, etc. The instruments used include guitars and contrabass, in addition to the keyboard presence, as well as some programmed beats (though not common and subtle when used). The writing is very tasteful. One might think that such structures and instrumentation would lend themselves to cheesy soundtrack music, but this is very well handled. The only thing I don't like is the opening track, "Epilogue for a Corrupted Mind", which uses samples from what is probably a traditional war song to back an exaggerated vocal speech that tries to use a thick German accent. The accent is what really bothers me, because it's not very convincing. The following track, "Victory Hymn", also contains dramatic vocals, but unlike the opener they work very well, nestled low in the mix and not strained or forced. There's an obvious theme running throughout the disc that ties in with the music/vocals. The first two tracks reference the phrase "victory or death" constantly, so I assume that the concept of the record has to do with the nature of war and the lust for power (power stemming from victory) and the price paid. Victory at any cost, perhaps? The recording is excellent, clear and full of detail, supremely mixed with vocals often hovering quietly about - not dominant, but working together with the music. At times certain instruments are highlighted or volume swells accentuate important elements. The running times can vary from three minutes to 13+ minutes. "Onward Descending a March Never Ending" is more than 13 minutes of somewhat quiet, industrial sounds and machinated rhythms. This is definitely a unique project, featuring members of Long Winter's Stare (the only remotely comparable outfit to As All Die). Fans of dark ambient should appreciate this, though it is thoughtfully structured and intentional music. I usually don't like this sort of thing, but something about this is so effective… I find it interesting that the lyrics were not included, as that would have offered more insight into the direction of the album's concept. With a few slight alterations "Time of War and Conflict" would likely receive a perfect rating.[Notable tracks: Mother Earth, Onward Descending a March Never Ending]Crowd Control Activities - http://www.ezlink.com/~crowded/ |
