Press Reviews
Rise - Divina Aeternum (Nephilim) 2001
Rise has been a very respected band in the U.S. underground for almost a decade though only releasing a handful of independently financed blackened death releases. I've heard a bit of their early material and I couldn't get into it at all, but this album is a HUGE improvement. It's like the band got a makeover and came out a much more fiercer, darker, complex beast. Johnson Wang has been added as a keyboardist which adds a ton of atmosphere to the music and gives it an intensely grim coldness to it all. These songs are now longer, ranging from 4 to 7 minutes. Each song has a lot of parts to it adding up to the whole of the music which is always a plus; intense blasting parts backed up with keyboard chord progressions to quiet acoustic/synth duos to really good solos. Rise is one of those bands that wear their influences on their sleeves and make sure you know it. Dissection and Emperor are their most obvious influences. The band's choice and usage of certain dissonant chords is very similar to Emperor's. The way the riffs are played in are nearly identical to Dissection's 'Storm of the Light's Bane', and the acoustic parts on this Rise album might as well be lifted right from that aforementioned Dissection masterpiece. Even with the obvious "borrowing", 'Divine Aeternum' manages NOT to give me that "Hey, I've already heard this" feeling that I get from many bands these days. Overall, this album is very brutal, cold, epic, grim, complex, and extremely emotional with an excellent production to boot. If you are planning to wage an unholy war against Christianity, Rise - Divine Aeternum would be a perfect soundtrack to your conquest and war.
