Artist History
The band began aroung 1996-1997. Originaly under the excedingly dumb name "Liquid", the band made their first live performance at Newton North High School Battle of the Bands. At the time, the lineup consisted of lead vocalist and guitarist Evan Adair, guitarist and backup vocalist Eric Ryrie, bassist Dave Sicilian, and drummer Kyle Neeson. The band played a few covers and several original songs. The band received an average reception and mangaged to play their songs fairly well considering it was their first time playing live. The band practiced often in Sicilian's basement, however, and began to improve. A friend of the band, Sky Costello, expresed interest in joining the band, and soon was playing backup guitar for the band in exchange for letting the band practice in his basement studio. The quintet played at parties and at the next year's Battle. This time, under the new name "Nevereven", they were improved and had the crowd really rockin for their first two songs, until a really crappy third song that probably should not have been played drove the crowd away from the stage. The rest of the set was good, much improved from a year before, but still needed improvement. At the end of the year, drummer, Neeson, had to go off to college. Costello, who had been working on drumming skizzills, officially became the drummer for the band. The new quartet practiced very often, building up a large repotoire of songs. Repeated live performance opportunities fell through, however, and a discouraged Adair left the band. Realizing that the band suddenly was in need of a new singer/songwriter/guitarist, Costello managed to talk talented friend Logan Boyles, a singer in the high school choir, into joining. He played guitar as well and had had experience in other bands. This new Nevereven of Boyles, Ryrie, Sicilian, and Costello are the current members. This new quartet was formed in early 1999. After a few pactice sessions, the band set their sights on the WBCN Boston Battle of the High School Bands, a prestigious metro-Boston wide competition. The band quickly put together 2 or three original songs, and sent in the single "Kickin' Groove" (recorded in Costello's basement) to enter into the Battle. The band was one of only 21 bands selected to compete. The band had about a month to put together a solid 20 minute set to perform, and they managed to do so. The band played a solid set at Bill's Bar in Boston for the 1st round of the Battle, and won over the six other acts competing that day. The stunned band realized that in just two weeks they would be playing at the House of Blues in Cambridge for the finals. Nevereven played two live shows at a school, and at a community band competition to work out their live show before the finals of the Battle. The band played a scorching set at the House of Blues in the finals, winning over much of the crowd. But the judges picked a quality Marilyn Manson type band over your heroes Nevereven in the finals. It was extremely close, with Nevereven getting at least one 1st place vote out of the four judges (which included Dicky Barrett of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones). The band was extremely happy with their second place finish however, and used the studio time they won to make a five song demo CD at a quality studio. The songs you hear on mp3.com are from that demo. We are all away at college now, but will be getting back together in the summer to play more. |

Press Reviews
Newton Tab March 24th 1999 - Nevereven: The quartet was the final band to play in their round and they captured it by offering up the most versatile and accomplished set of the day. They were up against strong competition and produced a stellar set. They also seemed to be the best musicians in the entire Battle. Both guitarists Eric Ryrie and Logan Boyles are especially effective players and they work well together. Bassist Dave Sicilian was terrific, offering complicated runs without upstaging his band mates, and drummer Sky Costello was an anchor. What they need to do to win: If they can play a set as compelling as the one in the preliminaries, they will be quite all right. Boyles should work on making sure his vocals are prominent and that they cut through the mix. There were times that he pulled away from the microphone to play guitar in the middle of a vocal phrase. Also, Ryrie seems to be a stickler for proper tuning, but with a 20-minute set, he can't be wasting too many minutes tuning up. If songs are in a different key, bring two guitars already tuned to specification. Every minute of every set is precious in the finals. Newton Tab April 5th 1999 - ...the talented and very expressive rock band Nevereven from Newton. The quartet has a twin guitar attack that's killer -- both Eric Ryrie and Logan Boyles have chops galore -- and they demonstrated a good sense of songcraft throughout the entire Battle. Their set at the finals was fluid and crunchy and they won over a lot of the packed House of Blues as well as scoring very well with the judges. They have great promise and, no doubt, more will be heard from them in the future. |
