Press Reviews
www.dynamicrock.com/reviews/d/drowningseason.html: Hailing from the talent-laden streets of Boston, MA, Drowning Season is just one of many up-and-coming bands, and have not garnered nearly the amount of recognition that the band deserves. Drowning Season is truly one of the more talented & blooming artists out there in today’s music world and will shortly become a respected name. Enter their realm today and become a part of the next revolution. Originating from Buffalo, NY, the three-man crew of Jason, Matt and Albert spent several years defining and establishing their sound, which finally coalesced sometime in the year 1998 in Boston, MA, into the unit now known as Drowning Season. Featuring a diverse range of musical influences and talents, as well as a unique artistic vision, Drowning Season incorporates these factors and more into the intricately-wrought and dynamically superior harmonics that radiate outward with grace and passion into the hearts & minds of listeners everywhere. Incorporating styles and influences from a number of bands, including the aggression & rhythm of Helmet, the intricacies of Tool or Meshuggah, the melodies of Alice In Chains or Depeche Mode, the variety of Faith No More or Mr. Bungle, and the level of "cool" possessed by the Deftones, Drowning Season is a band for the masses. Seamlessly blurring the lines between melodic and aggressive, an aura of rhythmic sensations flows smoothly outward from intelligent song structures rife with variations and masterful musicianship. Fusing thought-provoking riffs and engaging melodies with shimmering basslines and dynamic drumwork, Drowning Season creates a melange of contrasting, emotional medleys that will take the listener to new levels of heightened sensations. Highly engaging melodies and tranquil harmonics serenely flow with grace & style from the impassioned vocals of frontman/guitarist Jason Calieri. Utilizing clean, crisp vocals that croon outward in a style reminiscent of Alice In Chain's Layne Staley, Jason's vocals instantly attract the listener with their beatific nature and engaging, almost mesmerizing pitch & tone of his voice. Beautiful, melodious singing, dense, spoken word, and hypnotic background singing & crooning capture perfectly the subtlety & expressionism of Jason's introspective lyrics. With Jason both singing and playing guitar, the music & vocals seem to weave a mysterious dance of ensuing equanimity or oneness that takes the music of Drowning Season to new levels of beauty and serenity as the two parts feed off of each other with growing intensity. Having unleashed their latest EP upon the unsuspecting world, Drowning Season's 5-song demo is a breath of fresh air in a very stale music scene and will definitely strike an inner chord with its listeners. "All Down" begins the epic escapade into the world of Drowning Season, as the listener is privy to an aggressive intro, which then shifts into soul-searing riffs and beautiful, ethereal vocals, and is concluded by an aggressive outro. "Can't Believe" continues the journey with masterful vocals, dark, spoken word, chunk-filled riffs and engaging melodies and powerful choruses. "Bold" incorporates grand effects with aggressive riffs and dynamic vocals and spoken word, to create an engaging and eclectic repast into Drowning Season's visage. "Home" concludes the epic journey with endearing vocals along appealing verses, sweeping choruses, lavishing energetic riffs, and excellent variations throughout as the song is expressed as a ballad of tremendous proportion. Each and every song on the demo is highly engaging, intelligently written, very long & epic in nature with an aura that is simply beautiful & appealing. Drowning Season is one of the few bands out there today to truly express themselves as individuals and as a unit. The music truly captures the essence of both melody & aggression and melds them together to create ballads of timeless passion & sincerity. Highly original, intelligent, and brimming with emotion, Drowning Season intertwines talented musicianship with overwhelming passion and artistic creativity to unleash a melange of music that spans genres and defies categorization. |
