Artist History
First composition was completed in 1976 in Devon, England. Usually I would be improvising at the piano
until a suitable idea would materialize, writing those down on manuscript paper. Almost the same technique
I use these days with the additional help from editing software, sound samples from various sources. When
I am travelling around the place, away from my current residence on Lamma Island, Hong Kong, then I'll
either write down my ideas on manuscript or use video, photos for a inspirational prompt. Although I have
had formal training in classical flute, piano, & theory of music, my composition skills are self taught which
helps me to be more Spontaneous and Improvisory, and get away from the traditional constraints of music
theory. Writing music acts as a sort of a live wire in my life and to channel my creativity. Composition style
includes Contemporary Classical, Experimental, Jazz, New Age, Improvisory. I like to play around with
alternating sections of dissonance and harmony. Other ideas which are included in my compositions are
pedal bass, long extended chords, solo interludes between segments of harmony or dis-harmony, doubling
up of bass and flute, sax or other solo instrument, and sections of disorganised, chaotic simultaneous melodies.
Influences are probably many. Ethnic & Oriental influences may be detected from time to time, picked up
during my 12 years in Asia, and travelling around Asian countries. Subject matter varies, but up to a point I
like to follow Impressionist concept of some feeling or impression of a particular event, place or feeling that
is happening now. My music is developing all the time, and usually I'm not sure what the next composition will
sound like until it starts to unfold.
