Artist description
A fiery, talented group of young musicians interpret Sickafoose's imaginative compositions. "The music leaves the listener prodded and suspended in ways only certain Mingus tracks (“Pussy Cat Dues,” maybe) can manage. You get an impression of spontaneity within structures that are actually fully thought out. Remarkable.” (LA WEEKLY) |

Artist History
"A versatile bassist highly visible in the SF Bay Area by virtue of his work in the Noe Venable Trio, Noe Venable & the Ruiners, the Scott Amendola Band, the Jenny Scheinman Quartet, the Tony Furtado Project, and other groups, Sickafoose released his debut recording as a leader, “Dogs Outside” (Evander Music), earlier this year. With saxophonist Eric Crystal (Peter Epstein’s on the CD), trombonist Alan Ferber, guitarist Justin Morell, and drummer Mark Ferber, the group deftly negotiates its leader’s slinky compositions, creating an ensemble feel made up of colors and textures that sidestep the conventional sounds of mainstream jazz. A former student of Charlie Haden, Mel Powell, and Wadada Leo Smith, Sickafoose builds upon their teachings with a bold and refreshing imagination." (Derk Richardson, East Bay Express -- October 2000). |

Press Reviews
"[Dogs Outside] ranks as one of the best discs to be released so far this year." (LOS ANGELES TIMES) The LA WEEKLY recently cited Sickafoose as an “innovative orchestrator of abstractionist colorations . . . the melodies are strong, the rhythms sophisticated.” The Weekly also identified Sickafoose as “a hard-driving, technically indomitable bassist: at 24, he’s already hard to ignore.” (January 1999) |
