Robert Rude, Arcade
CD-Chameleon
With more electric guitars than you can comprehend, Robert Rude's CD "Arcade" is a big block chevy with bright red paint
thundering down I-84 between Hermiston and Pendelton, Oregon. Twelve songs couldn't go faster than these. They cruise in
the deep pavement groove of long lasting, highly memorable power pop tunes...That place where they hang waiting to infiltrate
your brain so that you too can walk around humming melodies like an idiot.
This baby was built in the garage where real cars come from; not in some factory. Using his own 32 track studio, Robert
Brown, alias Robert Rude, had the luxury of recording his project the way he wanted to.
On a CD where the liner notes site a "Flying V Orchestra" on one tune and "Swarm O' Slides" on another, perhaps an
alternate title for Rude's Arcade could be "Guitar World." The tracks display influences ranging from Tom Petty to Bruce
Springsteen and even some Hendrix sounding guitar played by Howard Gee on "Demons."
But Rude's music sounds like Rude with some songs written 40 minutes before they were tracked. Cut 1 "Girl Like You" lays
down an intricate melody over a simple chord progression...maybe one of Rude's formulas for writing a memorable song.
Starting with a deceptively alone bass line the song builds to an explosive ending. The vocal makes you want to find that girl
he's singing about and bring her back to him. Track 6, another ruse, has exactly the opposite approach this time using a
complex chord structure under a simple melody. Starting with a single guitar effect played by someone or something they call
"Dominic Noodles," the song ends in a sinister detonation of music and singing with a story line as dark as the music.
Arcade is a guitar extravaganza that goes fast because it flows from one song to the next as it juxtaposes musical energy and
style in a very developed sense of songwriting.
