Get Into The Act: Motherwell
by John Terlesky of The Morning Call
In a cover band-dominated local musical scene that demands a certain amount of familiarity and accessibility, Motherwell is trying to temper those qualities with some personal expression, a balance that is in evidence on the Allentown quintet's latest recording, "Vidalia" (Medical).
Motherwell will mark the release of the 10-song disc, which is brimming with radio-ready hooks and melodies bolstered by the band's trademark two-guitar punch, with a show Saturday night at Bethlehem's Funhouse.
But from the band's various influences — most notably R.E.M., U2 and Oasis — Motherwell has fashioned something with its own stamp on it.
"We don't write anything and say, 'This is cool but it doesn't really fit the three-minute radio cut-off mark,''' explains lead singer Doug Batt. ''We just go and make it a Motherwell song. If it's trendy, fine; if it's not, fine. We don't go out of our way to be weird, either. We just want to make the best song possible."
Batt, whose bandmates include lead guitarist Sean Shields, rhythm guitarist Sean Hieter, bassist Andy Barilla and drummer Tim Nagle, says that Motherwell brings the same basic philosophy to the stage, seeking to find a happy medium between being entertaining and musically fulfilled.
"We have a good mix of both. We entertain, but I think we entertain by how much we get into our own stuff. I'm not one to egg the crowd on; that's not me at all. I think we just play our stuff and try to blow them away with that."
