Artist History
"I like to write songs about cities and small towns, the ghosts that hover around the edges,
dreams and dreamers, families...broken and whole, sin, redemption and the struggle in
between, love, squalor, motels, churches, kings and the common man. I write about life as I
see it, or sometimes just how I'd like it to be".
Buck Storm
Buck remembers coming to Los Angeles from Arizona in the late eighties with his old band and playing at venues like FM Station
and Madame Wong’s West. "We played every original music club L.A. had to offer." The crowd, true to the times, was usually a
scattered few dressed in black and wearing the latest Duran Duran hairstyle. "For fun we'd sometimes throw in a Johnny Cash or
George Jones song," recalls Buck. “Those sets were pretty strange," he says. "Most of the people would stare at us like we were
idiots. We really didn’t care, those songs reminded us of home.” Slowly, the crowds grew and the people began smiling.
Time passed, members shuffled, band names floated around.....and Buck wrote. Eventually the day came, as the dust was settling
yet again, that he decided it was time to pull together the right players. "I was looking for guys who could simply play and believe
in the songs I was writing." Things came together and the project was called simply "Buck Storm".
Rob Malanca had already been playing with Buck for several years. "It was no question that Rob had to be in the band," Buck says.
" He is a master at painting pictures with sounds and melodies on the guitar. His parts continually floor me, and if the guys ever
gave me the boot I am sure the lead vocal department wouldn't suffer, he's really a great singer.”
Jon Payne came to the group dragging along his own fan club. He and his former band “The Fuzz,” have shared a bill with such
acts as The Brian Setzer Orchestra and The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band. Buck once told Jon he liked a part he was working on
and he said simply, “Well, I think it will make people smile.” That says a lot about the way he plays, and if you ask Buck, “Jon
knows more chords than is healthy.”
Buck first heard Jason Campbell playing bass on a “Sweet Onion” CD. “When I heard Jason's record I really thought he had an
incredible style," says Buck. "A very tight player but lots of emotion, so I called and invited him to a rehearsal. He came and luckily
he kept coming back.” Jason plays mostly frettless bass and is truly a player's player.
Rounding out the band on drums is Buck’s long time friend Joe Mayhew. “Joe and I grew up together in Yuma, Arizona. We started
our first real band together when we we're still in high school. That was the same band that brought us to L.A. I'm very glad to
be playing with him again. He's an innovative drummer that time after time can create a groove that really defines the song. Joe's
lived a lot of these songs and truly helps this band capture what it’s after.”
The bands self-released CD, “GOODBYE FROM VENUS” was written by Buck Storm and co-produced by Buck and Jon Payne.
Recorded in West Covina, CA at Vintage City Studios, this is an album that tells stories. In the music you see the weathered, lined
but ever hopeful face of the American dreamer. Maybe he and his dream have seen a lot of miles, but his eyes are bright and his
boots are shined. You see small towns and big dreams in songs like "Trailer Full of Crosses", or the dark, rough part of the road
in "Rage of Angels". "We've all got our bright shining faces, and we've all got demons in our pockets," Buck says. "They probably
even each other out. I think there's something here for everyone."
The music has been described in a lot of ways from Americana to Rock-N-Roll to Alternative Country. The band feels it falls
somewhere between U2 and Willie Nelson, but who ‘s to say? “Whatever it is, it’s from the heart and as honest as we can make
it.” - Buck.

What people are saying
about Buck Storm...
Far too many times it has become a normal thing to compare new artists with old ones in order to define their sound... Thank God that Buck Storm defies that norm.
Here's a band that has so much sincerity and gut wrenching originality that it should make anyone stand up and take notice. I haven't been able to take the cd out if the player yet and it's been weeks since the first listening. I love these guys.

What intrigued me the most when listening to their tape was the quality of their songs. We rarely see bands today that both write and play as well as Buck Storm.

Buck Storm's heartfelt singing, is matched only by the muscular playing of his band. Heavy on the guitar riffs and pedal, with just enough country flourishes to make your mama smile. This debut album is equal parts rock and country.

Buck's got a money voice, and his band's got heart. I tip my Stetson to y'all!
My first trip to the Coach House on Friday night was for Buddy Miles Express and Buck Storm. Opener Buck Storm, who sold 140 tickets to the event, has got the country thing down, tied and tuned to a soulful, sweet little drawl. It would be great to see them on a country bill. "Trailer Full of Crosses" was a personal fave.
