Artist History
Alonzo "Pookie" Johnson was born in Indianapolis, in 1927. He attended Crispus Attucks High School and Butler University's
Arthur Jordan College of Music. He is the father of six children, three in some form of the arts.
Pookie has traveled with many bands, including The Sax Kare Band, The Eddie Bird Sextet, King Kolax Big Band, The Montgomery-Johnson Quintet, And the Jimmy Cole Orchestra.
Over a period of fifty years Pookie has been fortunate enough to perform with such notables as Wes, Monk and Buddy Montgomery, Willis Kirk, Freddie Hubbard, Slide Hampton, Leroy Vinegar, Jimmy Coe, Rusell Webster,
The Hampton Sisters, Billy Wooten, and many others. He has also led his own groups through the years. |
