Artist History
Inspired by Electronica, Soul, and Lounge, Papa Byrd has been laying down eclectic beats since 1994. Originally founded as Groove Line 9, Papa Byrd is a collaboration between Scott Christopher (who recently joined OO Soul), and Christopher Hall. By 1997 the band was picked up by indie recording label City of Angels, who suggested a name change. Tapping a 1970’s comedic film for inspiration the group emerged as Papa Byrd.
Since 1997 Papa Byrd has been hard at work laying down tracks and spawning some of Southern California’s hottest nightclub events. For the past year they’ve been spinning a Friday night residency “Underground Lounge” at La Cave in Costa Mesa, Ca. Papa Byrd was also involved in the launch of one of LA’s most popular monthly parties “SPACE IS THE PLACE” which has been featured in the LA Times and on the Fox News. Finding a formula for success, they’re latest venture “JAM”, a monthly party at the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa has been drawing well over 500 people a month. Jam is a showcase event at one of the hottest new spots in Southern California.
Their first 7 inch single Pure Imagination and first CD / 12 inch The Many Moods of Papa Byrd are now available from Transistor Recordings. Both recordings celebrate the duos love for classic funk, soul and lounge records, but the sound moves much more into the future than it revels in the past. Eclectic breaks, down tempo grooves and even a little drum and bass showcase The Many Moods of Papa Byrd that are often conveyed through their eclectic and increasingly more popular DJ sets.
Spinning and producing a fusion of whatever they feel like and something youve never heard, Papa Byrd has created a groove that is distinctly their own.
