You may be wondering, "What happened to all the jamz that used to be here?" Well, I've done some contemplating, some research and while I'll continue to have music available on MP3.com, I'm limiting myself to my involvement here for a few reasons.
MP3.com is no longer independent of the music industry that it sought to distance itself from. In partnering with them (Vivendi to be exact), they've constucted a barrier that they fought from the beginning. While these changes don't directly affect you, the listener, they do in the way they affect the artist:
1. They now charge $19.95 per month for an artist to receive money for his own jamz, regardless of how much the artist actually makes.
2. They now require us (and ultimately you) to pay an additional $3.99 each in "production costs" to produce what used to be known as "DAM CDs".
3. "Cashback for Playback" changed the payout from 1.5 cents per play to 0.5 per play, which is 1/3 of what it used to be.
In addition, SONY, Bertlesman, Vivendi, EMI and others who control 80% of the world's record sales, and have banded together to lobby for amendments to United States copyright laws to their own financial corporate benefit. I don't endorse this organization, and have pulled a majority of my tunes off this site because of it. These changes are only deepening the pockets of the existing "powerhouses", while placing the burden on the independent artist and music lover.
