Welcome to the page of statik, formerly known as absolutniks on mp3.com.

You can do one of three things:

Please be advised that this page is no longer being maintained (hasn't been for quite a while, in fact). For news, recent tracks (both as "statik" and as "ymmv") and goodies by other artists, pay a visit to lomechanik.net. Information

Statik/Absolutniks is an electronic solo-project based in the small university town of Nijmegen, in the Netherlands. The music of statik consists of detailed explorations of new electronic sounds. In their final form, statik tracks tend to be rather minimalist, as it is only possible to appreciate and fully understand the depths of a new sound if it is presented in isolation.

    Rhythm

I have found rhythm to be one of the most subjective aspects of music. Basically, any sequence that is repeated often enough will be rhythmical.
This is a Good Thing. It means that standard rhythmical structures can be avoided without making ones music less demanding on a physical level. That said, occasionally it can be fun to create a standard four-to-the-floor using bizarre sounds.

    Influences

Hearing Pan(a)Sonic for the first time was probably one of the more formative events of my musical life. Sure, noise-rock had shown that, well, guitarnoise could be music, but the level of abstraction in this music was just mindblowing. It was an absolute home-coming for me. Not that I strive to do what they're doing, though. They served more as a pointer to what it was I should be doing.

Another important influence is Richie Hawtin / Plastikman and especially Concept. If there is one master in the genre of Techno, he is it. Most techno is crude and functions only to get large numbers of bodies moving. Though that can be an enjoyment on Saturday night, during the rest of the week something a little more intelligent is preferrable. The genius of Richie Hawtin resides in his being able to create intellectually stimulating music which at the same time works very well on the dancefloor. Play Concept at a ridiculous volume and then at a civilised volume. You'll see what I mean. There's an important lesson in that as well.

Lastly, Thomas Brinkmann and a whole bunch of other Germans, most notably the people over at Chain Reaction deserve mention. They may not serve as influences in the sense that their music has shown me new directions to take, but it's definitely music I can relate to and enjoy very much on a daily basis.

You will find pieces and explorations that are somewhat more recent than the ones posted here (which are well over a year old) as well as friendly, nay, lush, background music for romantic evenings as performed by YMMV. I repeat: click on this link for more enjoyment:

I made this track when I was trying to figure out a new piece of software that was recommended to me by The Smoke Cella. The track itself is a rather straightforward exploration of rhythm, rather than sound.

This track uses loops made on the two classic techno-machines, the 808 (which I prefer) and the 909. An attempt to create straightforward minimalist techno (a style I love very deeply).

Using a limited amount of raw material and a large amount of effects and manipulations I have attempted to recreate the soundscape I used to call home.
