"Resurfacing
with a refreshing brand of literate, minimalist pop-rock recalling vintage
Violent Femmes,
former John Huss Moderate Combo and Slink Moss member John
Greenfield gives a
collection of tunes about the joys of Chicago's indie-rock scene. My
favorite pays homage to Chicago's most famous female rocker."

"Chicago
Songs is full of the
sort of dopey-but-not-really humor rarely seen since the heyday of They
Might Be Giants or the Young
Fresh Fellows.
Greenfield takes on everything from the perils of falling ice to, most
memorably, Liz Phair.
'I wasn't exactly in love with her / I just wanted to be her,' Greenfield
sings in 'Liz Phair.' Pared-down and smart, Chicago Songs is an
old-fashioned rock record with a relatively novel lack of irony or
pretense."
Alison
Stewart, Chicago Tribune
"JGRB's
songs exude the simplicity of early Jonathan
Richman with a similar
sense of naīve humor: 'Liz Phair' is a love song about the Chicago staple
that features some delightfully silly rhymes."
Josh
Klein, the Onion
"Greenfield and his
crack band - bassist Ella
Farmer and drummer Eric
Roth - bring their
particular spins to familiar subject matter both in approach and lyrical
spin. The band gains a great deal from Greenfield's semi-bluesy riffing,
and the rhythm section makes the whole affair far more driving than the
average folk rock record deserves to be."
Sam
Eccleston, University of Chicago Maroon
"A legend of sorts
around the local scene, Greenfield leads his band through stripped-down
numbers that combine catchy chord progressions with corny, clever
lyrics."
Waymon
Timbsdale, Roctober Magazine
"John Greenfield's
Rock Band rocked my Wednesday afternoon. I especially liked 'Liz Phair'
(though I barely know her music), 'Icelandic Sagas' (why
does every guy I know like Bjork?)
and 'House of Cards' (also a good movie with Kathleen
Turner). I think I
chuckled at all the right moments."
