"String Quartet" (1995) derives its underlying structure from data on the orbits and rotational perionds of the sun, moon, and earth from Spring Equinox, 1992 to Spring Equinox, 1993. These data describe several layers of asynchronous cycles which I used to control the underlying structure of the music - harmonic density and rhythm, tempo, etc. On the surface level, I attempted to create continuously shifting textures in which emerging themes are quickly subducted to the background as new themes emerge. This piece was a finalist in the ASCAP Young Composers Competition. |

"Dumb it Down" (1997) is the first movment of "Three Serious Pieces for Orchestra" and was written as a fun respite from the serious work of writing my dissertation. It explores some of the possibilities of orchestrating techno-house dance music. |

"Requiem" was written shortly after the death of my favorite painter (1989) when I discovered that he and I shared the same birthday. The piece was created entirely on a Synclavier using samples of voices, human and otherwise. It is partly an experiment in creating an aural analog of surrealism - taking familiar objects out of context and distorting them. This piece won honorable mention at the Bourges International Electro-Acoustic Composition Competition in 1990. |
