	The story of James Russell was inspired by the life and music of Jimmy Mack. It is the story of teenager James Russell's battle to break from his father's belief that "life is a cruel joke". When Jimmy's father, Big Red Russell was sixteen years old he skipped school and his father went looking for Big Red. Big Red's father was killed in an automobile accident. Jimmy never knew his paternal grandfather. This tragic event destroys Big Red. He turned to alcohol and died prematurely at age fifty one. Each song in this first episode punctuates one of the events that take place in James Russell's life as he struggles to complete his senior year in high school.
