The Kevin Pike Duo got its start in 1997. It was actually the idea of bassist Adam Johnson. At the time, Adam was playing solo classical arrangements on his Taylor acoustic fretless bass guitar. He decided to try adding another instrument to the mix so he called on saxophonist Kevin Pike, whom he had played with at Chicago's Navy Pier from 1995-1996.
Adam arranged many standard works from the classical repertoire for the unique setting of alto sax and acoustic bass guitar. The Duo began peforming these every Sunday night at a Thai restaurant in Chicago called "Once Upon A Thai." To mix things up, the duo also played jazz standards and some jazz arrangements of pop songs.
In 1999, Adam left Chicago for Springfield, Missouri. The group changed names from the Adam Johnson-Kevin Pike Duo to the Kevin Pike Duo. Kevin continues to play in Chicago with the duo, but rotates bass players.

Here's a song written by Kevin Pike in the style of the classic standards from the 30's and '40s. This is an example of the Duo's jazz sound--with Kevin on alto sax and Adam on bass. Check out how Adam does more than just walking on the bass in the accompaniment part. |
