Contrary
to popular belief, ragtime in the ragtime era was more often heard
as played by bands than on piano. The great John Philip Sousa often
featured ragtime music in his programs, as did community bands and
other ensembles.
Now
you can hear the original sounds of this exiting music, and the incredibly
creative new music of Stephen Kent Goodman - the most gifted composer of
modern ragtime for band.
We
hope you enjoy his music.

(1983) A modern One-Step that departs from traditional form, its title referring to a state of mind, rather than a specific city in the U.S. Goodman conducts the 74-piece University Of Wisconsin - Eau Claire Symphony Band as it renders superb performances of entertaining rags written by brass band conductors and arrangers during the period from 1909 to 1925, as well as eight composed by Goodman himself, all within the ragtime idiom of the earlier period. As ragtime composer player and critic Jack Rummel writes in November 1992 Rag Times, "May this mark the beginning of a new craze in ragtime - ragtime for band! Highly recommended." |

(Humoresque) 1911. Performed by the Los Angeles Pierce College Symphonic Winds, Stephen Kent Goodman Guest Conductor. Composer Egbert Van Alstyne was born in Marengo, Illinois. In 1901, he went to New York, where he and Harry H. Williams, a vaudeville actor and lyricist, collaborated on songs including "Navajo." The "Humoresque" was a popular style of a fantasy for band; Sousa wrote many of them, as did most of the other well known composers and arrangers of the early 20th century. This rag song was a huge hit with audiences then, making it an ideal candidate for arranger J. Bodewalt Lampe's "humoresque" treatment? While light-hearted in nature, this work is in reality a mini-symphonic ragtime poem: an effort by the arranger to integrate the ragtime idiom into the 1911 concept of symphonic thinking. |
