The
Dawn of the Century Ragtime Orchestra is no more... but their music
lives on in a new CD from Merry Makers Record Company.
Active
in the early 1970s and formed by a group of enthusiasts from the
Maple Leaf Club in Southern California, this orchestra worked
from the original ragtime-era arrangments to recreate the authentic
sound and spirit of real ragtime. It was perhaps the first of
all the Ragtime Revival Orchestras.
In
addition to these authentic arrangements, some of the cleverer
members of the orchestra created their own masterpieces, much
to the delight of audiences. We hope you enjoy their music.

Composed and arranged by Mike Baird, 1968. This innovative rag was originally composed by the orchestra’s clarinetist for piano, but it lends itself well to an orchestral treatment. It was named for Portuguese Bend, a scenic stretch of California coastline. The composition of modern rags continues to this day, with many talented young writers producing a vast and varied assortment of excellent ragtime. |

By Harry Von Tilzer, lyrics by Vincent Bryan, arr. by Everett J. Evans, 1909. Von Tilzer and Bryan were two of Tin Pan Alley’s top talents with many hits to their credit. In the first decade of the century Von Tilzer was probably the most successful composer-publisher on the Alley. Like many ragtime songs, this one extols the romantic and exciting qualities of an imaginary dance at a time when young people first ventured out into public cabarets to dance the often scandalous and grotesque new ragtime dances. |

By W.H. Kiefer, 1908. This is one of over 150 "trombone smears" written by many composers as humorous trombone showcases for concert use and especially as accompaniment for acts of circus clowns. The "smear" apparently originated in black minstrel shows and side show bands where it was called a “jazz.” The first such smears appeared in the late 1890's and remained popular for over thirty years. |
