Sam Scratch is a Minneapolis-based, four-piece band that plays an eclectic mix of alternative pop. With all four members sharing song-writing duties, our music is refreshingly dynamic and memorable. Rarely do we hear the "all your songs sound the same" criticism that plagues so many bands.
While we believe our music is unique, we are continually faced with that inevitable question, "Who do you sound like?" Well, many of our fans have answered that question by comparing us to such bands as R.E.M., Husker Du/Sugar, and Soul Asylum.
Since forming in 1997, Sam Scratch has played dozens of shows in clubs throughout the Twin Cities and across the Midwest. Some of the Minneapolis clubs we play on a regular basis include First Avenue, the Uptown Bar, and the Fine Line. Sam Scratch also has two recordings to its credit. They are : "Taste of Regret," a six-song EP released in 1998; and our latest, full-length effort, "Redline".
Sam Scratch’s members have been playing and writing music in various Minneapolis bands for several years. All the members agree that the chemistry created in Sam Scratch has been worth the wait. The following is some more in-depth information on what makes the individual members of Sam Scratch tick:
Vocalist / guitarist Matthew Anderson is a longtime fan of punk and hard rock. Some specific influences include Bob Mould, James Hetfield and Johnny Marr. His aggressive vocal style does much to give Sam Scratch its edge.
Guitarist / backing vocalist Michael Walsh is the newest edition to the band. He comes from a musical background that includes both classical training as well as several alternative rock bands. He lists Andy Summers, The Edge and David Gilmour as influences, and is a huge fan of punk, progressive rock and reggae.
Bassist Henry Breimhurst’s tastes lean more toward folk and British pop. His bass playing has been modeled in part after Adam Clayton and Peter Hook of New Order.
Drummer / backing vocalist Patrick Kerr is heavily influenced by what he calls "meat ‘n’ potatoes rock." His biggest drumming mentor is Boris Williams, formerly of The Cure. His vocal harmonies give many of Sam Scratch’s songs their depth and texture.
Sam Scratch is a band that genuinely enjoys playing the music we write. We like us, and we hope you will, too. Give us a listen, and have a great day!
