***The Westberry Rose Experience Biography***
We can not make you appreciate Westberry Rose. Nor can we convey to you, in mere print, what their music means to them and to their small following. These are things you can only do for yourself. What we can do although, is give you an insight as to where this rock and roll band is coming from and hopefully an idea as to where they are headed.
Westberry Rose is a band that was a long time in the making. It started with Frank Comparri, lead singer and songwriter, and his high school friends, in the place every band starts...the basement of there drummer's parent's house. The group worked up several instrumental covers while trying to decide who was actually going to attempt to sing them. Up stepped Frank, whose singing at the time was somewhat raw and rough. But for what he lacked in dynamic ability, he made up in pure passion
and a heartfelt commitment to his music. Little did Frank know this was only the first step of many in what was to become of Westberry Rose.
At the same time, another area band, Grounded, was doing their best to make the most out of the South Jersey music scene. They spent their high school years playing in local bars, working on originals, and trying to figure out just where this music was taking them. And what two of the members saw was their band heading towards a strict Top 40 playlist. Drummer, Gary Tubertini and guitar player, Bob Baker feared becoming the band they never wanted to be. So with that, Grounded
disbanded. In the months after the breakup, the two musicians started to explore their musical options. Tubertini put together a band with a harder, heavier sound, while Baker hooked up with some friends in a band called Marmoset. Marmoset seemed to be a band in constant change, and by this time, Frank had been enlisted as
Marmoset's lead guitar player and occasional singer. So along with bassist Shaun Rody, the Westberry line up was beginning to take shape. Marmoset was a strong, full band and along with a set list that was sure to please anyone, the musicians once again took it to the bars. But with the loss of their lead singer and drummer in the winter of 1998, the band seemed to be stuck. Once again, Frank stepped up and in
came Gary Tubertini. The new four piece worked very well together, making the most of every song with influences that ran the spectrum and back. The band, as usual, did what they do best and found a weekly gig hosting an open mic at Rumor's Rib Room in Buena, New Jersey. For weeks the name on the marquee read Marmoset, until late one Thursday night the band took down the letters and put upWestberry Rose.
Westberry Rose's music is not alternative, nor is it punk or ska. What it is though, is simply, feel good rock and roll. The band has found a sound. A sound, that while it works off many great artists of the past, feels entirely new and fresh. This, along with a complete dedication to their music, is what makes Westberry Rose special. They are fans of and believe in music. And it is that belief that has
pushed these boys from New Jersey to take their music down the coast. Westberry Rose is heading out, in a winnebago full of faith and dreams, to see what one rock and roll band can do. They know the odds are against them. They also know the road may be long and sometimes shaky, but the music will be there to carry them. And all they ask is that you let the music carry you also. Spirit, faith, dreams and all.
