First off Im one of the last of the children
of the 60s. Born in Brighton, Dec 14th 1969 and brought up on
the sunny south coast of England.
When I was 11 I had a major accident that left me in hospital for
a few months with my leg strung up. To ease the boredom, mum bought
me a guitar and I learnt to annoy the nurses. For the next couple
of years I played around with three chords, eventually got around
to learning a forth and started a band with my mates Jay and Matt.
We went through a huge style switch, starting as a Rockabilly band
and progressing through Punk (Sex Pistols, Anti Nowhere League), to
Rock (Ramones, Squeeze, Undertones) until we finally parted company,
Matt to work as a kitchen porter, Jay to nerd away on technology and
me... Well, as an angry young teenager I ended up on the wrong side of the law on a number of occassions.
When I was 16 I was arrested and put in a childrens home while I awaited trial.
I escaped and ran away with a friend. We ended up in Northampton with no idea where we should head.
While I stood in the town centre a guy came up to us and offered us a free dringk and a meal.
He was from a group called the Jesus People. I stayed with them for about 6 months. It was a cheap bed and food for the night but I
eventually began to see these guys had something more than a 'do-good' attittude. They believed something and had something real in thir lives.
I was a waster with nothing. I decided to give God a chance, if he was there. I'm still here now and god is in the middle of everything for me.
I got involved in the PA
and Music scene for the church and soon had some major achievement
under my belt with venues such as the Wembley Conference Centre, Manchester
Apollo, Sheffield City Hall and a host of others. I was writing songs
now and appeared on 7 independent CD released by the church.
In 1994 I met Jean (who is incidently, amazing). We married in 1995 and eventually
moved to Coventry.
With some friends I set up Goldsmiths, a band that played a collection
of original and cover material. We recorded our first CD, Iknow
Youknow at Appletree studios in Oxon in 1999. The CD received
some top reviews including Cross Rhythms (7/10). We played a live
radio set on CR Radio and gigged around the midlands. In 2001 my dad
was killed in the attacks on the World Trade Centre. This had a huge
effect on me and showed in the music I was writing. I appeared twice
on local radio and in January 2002 I organised a concert as a tribute
to the Sept 11th Victims. Five bands including myself played 4 hours
of music at the Butts College Theatre in Coventry and raised cash
for the British Red Cross.
Goldsmiths are still going strong and are involved
in a lot of church and charity work around Coventry. In addition I
started focussing on more solo acoustic material.
Style wise Ive been likened to Sting, Billy Brag and U2 but
Ive tried not to fall into a box in terms of what I sound like.
I just like to be me and I hope you like what you hear.
