The recent issue of same-sex marriage should awaken every red-blooded American to stand up for justice. This is not an issue only for gay people to be concerned with. This is about freedom and democracy and the rights of all people in America to enjoy the same level of benefits and opportunities, regardless of sexual preferences. President Bush (who is working with lawyers to further codify marriage as a union between man and woman) said 'I think it's very important for our society to respect each individual, to welcome those with good hearts, to be a welcoming country...' He then goes on to say, 'On the other hand, that does not mean that somebody like me needs to compromise on an issue such as marriage.' President Bush fails to point out that his personal belief on marriage, once made law, will affect the happiness and freedom of millions of Americans. Does this not go against the very soul of democracy? If someone is against same sex marriage, I value and respect their right to those feelings. However, once those feelings become laws that block the growth, freedom and happiness or others, I am entirely against it! The financial and emotional benefits of legalized marriage between people of the same sex are numerous and should be obvious. A straight man from Texas should certainly be able to voice their opinion on the subject, but should not abuse his power and authority to block the happiness and freedom of millions of Americans. I have written this song based on my concern and respect for those American citizens who deserve much better treatment. - John Haydon, August 2003 They don't recognize us - John Haydon - copyright 2003 they don't recognize us they don't recognize us love like ours is a threat so they don't recognize us equality, opportunity for everyone to enjoy just as long this love is between a girl and a boy they say the doors are open and all of us are free well, that door just slammed shut when they saw you and me they don't recognize us they don't recognize us love like ours is a threat so they don't recognize us there is a man from Texas as straight as straight can be happiness is for true Americans but not for you and me he can have his opinion he can have his say but he's making a law to lock our love away they don't recognize us they don't recognize us love like ours is a threat so they don't recognize us hey there mister president hey there mister pope you can take away our rights but you can’t take away our hope… violence and oppression are badges of the strong try to keep us quiet and we'll keep singing this song
