This sonata reeks of nostalgia, longing, regret, passion, and actually contains themes from several of Medtner's earlier works - he recalls not only earlier times, earlier emotions, but earlier compositions. Misha evokes a special, tender intimacy in the delicate, other-wordly opening, which returns at the end as the sonata subsides to its denouement. |

The slow, serious introduction to this Rondo belies the light, witty and virtuosic showpiece that follows. Misha brings all his Slacvic rhythmic flexibility and elan, his delight in phrases that speak eloquently if not profoundly, and the sheer fun of fingers that can FLY! |
