Interview - Rosanna Kandel Speaks With Lynval Golding

    A Special Time in Music
    by Rosanna Kandel

Flashback to London, 1982. Black kids and white kids sporting porkpie hats and natty suits. At the vanguard of this fanatical fashion movement and a newfangled punk-fueled take on ska was Conventry's, the Specials. Their self-titled, Elvis Costello-produced debut, released on their own 2-Tone label, had already jolted the British charts in 1979. It prompted the support of fellow Ska mates like the English Beat, Madness, and Selecter. Their country's 1981 number one hit "Ghost Town," struck at London's growing racism and unemployment.

We recently had a chance to speak with Lynval Golding, founding member and guitarist of the Specials, to talk about ska past and present.
