I've been living in Brooklyn, Cape Town for about 7 or 8 years now. This city has to be visited to be fully understood - people's attitude to life, their whole outlook is different to anywhere else in the world. I think that comes through to some extent in my music. But my music, both what I create and what I listen to, are cosmopolitan.
One of the bands that has influenced me the most in recent years is Battery 9 from Johannesburg, South Africa. They are the definitive industrial techno band, breaking ground and defining their own sounds in a genre that few other bands have managed to work in successfully. They are easily comparable to any more high-profile international act in terms of music quality. Perhaps more significant, is the fact that they are also great guys. Paul Riekert, the front man, has been very supportive of me, and has even given me permission to use some of their own material in my work.
They're well worth checking out. Their website is Screaming Machine, run by an ardent fan. You can find their music at One World, and I'm nagging Paul to put some of their stuff up here on www.mp3.com.
