Mumpsie was created from the collaborated efforts of guitarist/singer Alex Nichols and drummer Dan Skarbek. Alex and Dan met at Loyola University New Orleans freshman year on the famous 2 South of the Biever Dormitory. The two later moved off campus together, and after two years of jamming, Mumpsie came into being in late 2002.
Mumpsie played a few shows with just Alex and Dan. Then in 2003, recording engineer Jay Crutti added his famous "nasty bass" to complete trio. The band has since played several shows and has a growing fan base across the dirty south. Mumpsie hopes to help put New Orleans on the map as a rock city, breaking away from the jazz only mentality.
Mumpsie prides itself on a strong reliance upon DIY ("do-it-yourself" for the uncultured) philosophy. By keeping as many aspects of the Mumpsie as possible under the sole control of the band, Mumpsie is is able to give its audience music made solely for music's sake.
Mumpsie believes that much of the music available to the general public today suffers from a lack of creativity and soul due to the the overemphasis on creating something that will sell. Granted this trend has always been around, but now more than ever it is evident in that the money is placed before the music on the radio, T.V., and just about every other major outlet. There is a difference between making money through music and modifying music only to make money. Mumpsie believes that people are tired of having cookie cutter music created only for money force fed to them. Mumpsie will always rock what they feel, not what their wallet feels (usually emptiness).
With this in mind, the band does its best to bring a pure, unadulterated sound to the floor. Mumpsie hopes that other bands join in the creation of music for music, and that the listeners support the cause by supporting independent bands.
So in conclusion, even if you think Mumpsie sucks, support other artists you like, especially smaller, independent ones that need the help. Some good places to start are mp3.com and iuma.com.
