julean simon - breath-controler
(wx5, vl70m, vl1m)
dedicated
to live-performed, free-improvised, electronic music, which is to say, that
no pre-produced musical material is used and no material is added or modified
musically in post-production.
a "breath-controler"
is an electronic instrument with saxophone-type key-fingering. the keys do not
alter the air-column, but trigger sensors. the instrument has a sax-like mouthpiece
with a lip-pressure sensor and a wind-gain sensor. the sensors send midi-data
to a synthesizer, which actually produces the sound. the yamaha vl1-m synthesizer
generates sound by algorithms called "physical modelling" which calculates
a sound on the basis of the physical properties of a wind- or string-instrument.
as a former saxophonist simon achieves equivalent musical subtlety and complexity,
physical-tonal response and exacting instrument handling with the breath-controler,
although it took some time to fransfer his playing technique to this instrument
and to dive into the complexity of physical modelling voice-programming.
