Nemo History 101
Nemo introducing... Nemo
Nemo was formed over a nine-hole round of golf as the result of a conversation between (now departed) guitarist (not dead, just left) Shane Sawnerton and bass guitarist Arlo Baylis. Both were keen to try something a bit different; Shane was playing in Alien8 and Arlo in
Pattern. Both of these bands were straight hard rock, which is fine if that’s all you like. Nemo was going to be about trying to not consciously play any one style, but rather what each individual song required.
That’s what Sel Burkett was looking for as well. Sel is almost 21, the youngest member of the band, however she has already played in other bands and recorded 3 CDs. Sel has also done a number of solo appearances, armed with just her voice and her guitar, including such venues as Space, Indigo, and the (sadly missed) Treehouse.
Carrie Lewis had played the piano and keyboard for a few years, but Nemo is her first band.
It wasn’t until September 2001 that Anna Grace was added as the beat behind Nemo after advertising herself outside the Wellington Rockshop. Around the same time Shane decided to concentrate solely on
Alien8, so Nemo remained a four piece. The absence of the lead guitar made way for the further development and focus on keyboard melodies, and the increase in the importance of the rhythmic drive now strengthened by the drums.
November 2001 was when Nemo as it is today debuted. Playing The Cross on Nov 2nd, The Space Nov 7th and then Indigo on Nov 8th. The complete set list being comprised of original songs written by Sel and Arlo.
