While taking a class in classical accompaniment techniques, I had the fortunate experience of working with Annie Levey on several impressionistic pieces, including works of Faure and Moquet.
While rehearsing the pieces, we would often
say we had to “get into fairy mode” in order to create the correct mood. These zen and surreal nature of these rehearsals inspired me to write this six and a half minute process piece for flute and piano.
I began by composing a counterpoint for
flute and piano. After recording these parts, I experimented with different processing on each. I wanted to give the listener an idea of the mental journey I took while accompanying Annie: from conciously rehearsing the parts to
“fairy mode” and the back to conciousness.
Special Thanks to Kara Baer and Annie Levey. |

This eight and a half minute narrative piece was inspired by Erik S. Lesser’s photoessay of the New York Doll Hospital (www.erikfoto.com). After viewing these haunting photographs, I imagined the doll parts coming to life and assembling
themselves. I aimed to create a piece
that was both haunting and childlike for the listener.
Doll Hospital was improvised using
my MAX patch, Songs for Doll Hospitals, also inspired by Lesser’s photoessay. |
