Morgana and the Monstars is an eclectic, amorphous musical project based in Sydney, Australia. Centered on a collaboration between two of Sydney's most well-respected independent musicians, the Monstars have quickly gained a loyal and enthusiastic following. The first album 'Meet the Monstars' was reviewed well and widely praised in the independent press.
"Better Life is a beautiful, melodic ballad. For mine it's one of the highlights of the album, mainly because of the melody line. It's not just accoustic guitars though as you get electric violin, samples, ethereal vocals and swirling percusssion... Over all the album shows strong songwriting and is a promising debut."
Mark Nielsen. [Drum Media 24.Dec.2002.]
The Monstars were formed in 2000 while Morgana was still the frontperson of the now much lamented heavy rock outfit, Nitocris. Morgana and the Monstars began in 2000 when Morgana Ancone was invited to sing at one of Jeff Duff's notorious tribute nights. On that night Morgana met Joseph Calderazzo [Akradia, Jeff Duff, Matt Finish] and an all but immediate artistic affinity developed between the two of them. Morgana and Joseph began to jam and the Monstars were born.
Joseph's undisputed talent as a guitarist forms a cornerstone for the Monstars. His ability to move through genres and his capacity for innovation has made Joseph one of Australia's most admired and sought after guitarists. Nobody will deny that he is simply one of the best guitar players working.
Morgana and the Monstars is a boldly experimental project, always keen to form new collaborations and experiment with new sounds. The performing lineup often changes and unexpected new musical directions are constantly appearing. Some of Australia's most esteemed musicians have contributed to the Monstars project.
Those who have served or continue to serve include Sara Gray [ex-Nitocris, the Prostitutes], Tara Mai Millet [backing vocalist on several Nitocris recordings], Paul Woosen [the Screaming Jets], Melissa Tschong [Dead in the Chrysalis], Matt Black [Fez Perez], Tony Ward [Critical Mass, Helter Pay], BenT+1 [A.D.D], Jodee Smith [Akradia], and Scott James Smith.
