    Jimmy Jack Black
    and the
    Cadillacs

Here is the story of Jimmy Jack Black and the Cadillacs.....

In 1965 The Beatles had agreed to perform a nine city concert tour in the Western United States during the Spring of 1967. Jimmy Jack Black and the Cadillacs were signed to be one of the opening acts for the Beatles on this tour. It was a sure way for Jimmy Jack and his band to strike a major blow in their efforts to build a fan base. This would mean the BIG time for Jimmy Jack.

It was at this same time that the Beatles were considering the idea of no longer touring, because the logistics of a Beatles concert, along with the incredible chaos and mayhem of Beatlemania wherever they went, tension among the band members themselves brought about by both wives and financial difficulties caused the Beatles to seriously consider moving their show into the studio, and off the concert trail completely.

In 1966 the decision was announced...the final live Beatle concert was played at Candlestick Park, in San Francisco. They would tour no more! The upcoming 1967 nine city concert tour was cancelled outright. No tickets had been sold, and the agreement was simply nullified. Jimmy Jack Black and the Cadillacs were unemployed.

For several months they worked bars in their home town of Phoenix, and then got a gig in a Casino in Vegas. The Casino job lasted for eight months, and in the winter of 1971 they signed a concert deal of their own when they landed a recording contract from the now defunct Ardent Records.

Ardent Records had plans of promoting Jimmy Jack Black and the Cadillacs straight into stardom, and their plan was a hard sales pitch to radio stations for airplay time, juke box operators for a record slot, and finally, build a strong fan base through touring. Jimmy Jack and the band were willing to do their part. They began a grueling 72 city tour date. A recording team accompanied the band to record live cuts for use in an upcoming album. Everything was going well.

In a large field on the outskirts of Bakersfield, California everything was being assembled for the Spring Concert Series sponsored by local radio stations. They had been advertising this event for weeks, and the anticipation was growing because it was going to be one of the biggest concerts of the season.

The motorcycle gangs began to arrive the day before the concert.

By the evening of the concert a wild and unruly crowd of over 40,000 young people gathered to watch the show. Members of the audience included gang members from Hells Angels and other dangerous motorcycle groups.

No one except the people directly involved know exactly what happened. The audio recording made during the concert and ensuing riot tell the story of what happened, but not who or why.

Jimmy Jack Black's career ended that night as surely as if the killer had taken direct aim at him and fired.

The tapes made during the concert were archived by Ardent Records and somehow remained intact and undisturbed for the next 14 years. In 1985 the tapes were discovered by a bankruptcy court official who knew the story of Jimmy Jack Black and the Cadillacs. He listened to the tapes and determined that they had no real commercial value, and they were auctioned off with everything else that had once been Ardent Records.

Again the tapes disappear. They remain hidden for 17 years until BadHands Music & Recording buys a trunk full of old microphones, tapes, and junk at a Sun City, Arizona estate sale. There, covered in dust is a tape. BadHands technicians listen and can't believe their ears, it is the lost recording of the Bakersfield concert, murder, and riot!

Presented here now for the first time is the three song recording that marks the beginning and tragic end to that Bakersfield concert.

This is the unedited, uncut recording as it was originally found. Although very rough and uneven it presents the sounds of a concert gone very bad.
