Summer 1982...
Elixir, a band that has now been forgotten by most, began the taping
of
several sessions in order to prepare for a studio recording. The band
had
never played together live in front of an audience except for once and
at
that time Mike wasn't with them yet. However that one place was the
Myriad
Gardens in Oklahoma City. It was the largest venue in the city and it
welcomed them as a second back-up on April 24 1982. They played before
the
Wood Stock performer Ritchie Havens who in turn played before Terence
and
the Tight Wire who were doing their 8th Day show.
The band was made up of five young men. They had all been in many bands
in
and around El Reno, Oklahoma. Troy Griffin played drums and sang
background
vocals. Dave Brittain played bass and sang both lead and background
vocals,
Johnny Ludlow played rhythm guitar, Greg Perkins played lead guitars,
and
Mike Matthews sang lead vocals. The songs were written by the different
members while the musical structure came together as a group effort.
The following are the un-touched cassette recordings. The title is
perfect
as this CD was taken from recordings made by placing a boom box in
front of
the band. They are very raw and in some cases there are numerous
problems
due primarily to the room. There was no real monitor set-up so the band
simply listened as best they could to the PA which carried the vocals
and
then to the amps and drums for guidance.
As stated above it has its better and worse. I put this collection
together
for the band members and anyone else interested in a band in its
formative
stage.
