The four members that make up Agynst (pronounced against) grew up together in Summerville, SC, a small southern town steeped in tradition. Mossy oaks and historic landmarks line the towns streets and political debates are likely to be resolved at the local diner and barbershop rather than within the walls of the courthouse. Amid the welcome perpetual hum that is Summerville, SC, the guys in Agynst have emerged from their practice shed with a new sound that blends elements of classic pop and indie rock seamlessly. Although the band’s early influences are rooted in punk and garage bands such as Nirvana and The Ramones, their debut self titled album is quite a departure from their initial mentors. While working on songs in 2001, the writing process took on a new direction drawing more from the pop end of the music spectrum versus the punk side. As the band entered the studio in 2002, Agynst emerged with a cd that was a varied blend of songs that shortened the gap between indie pop and garage rock. Songs such as "Dewanna" and "Black and Blue" were notable frontrunners on the record and there was a changing of the guard as The Beatles and Weezer became the dominant influence. Although the punk influence is absent on this record, the do-it-yourself ethos that is the cornerstone of the punk movement has carried over in the band’s approach to succeeding within the industry. Armed with a few copies of the cd, Agynst took to the streets knocking on doors of local record stores and music venues. Soon thereafter, they were entrenched in the process of learning how the music industry works. They stocked local record stores, met with local radio stations, took out ads, and blanketed the streets with posters and flyers all in anticipation of their record release show. Their initial dabbling paid off and Agynst played a headlining show to 650+ fans that night. Momentum has continued to build for Agynst and their perseverance and willingness to work hard to succeed remains steadfast. If 2002 was a year for invention and learning, 2003 is proving to be a year of enlightenment. "We were anxious to get the record out to the fans and we are proud of what we have accomplished", says lead singer Scott Gould "but, we are continuing to evolve as performers and songwriters and I feel the best is yet to come." In typical fashion, Gould has been looking ahead to the next record and working on new material. There is a sense of maturity found in the latest demos songs and the initial review of the debut cd has proved to be the inspiration needed to take Agynst to the next level. The most recent demo, "I Need a Woman" is an American rock anthem that finds Agynst looking back to their rock roots. Still in it’s infancy, the new songs have already begun to find the airwaves. WAVF 96.1 has begun spinning "I Need a Woman" and the song has been reacting. However, 96 WAVF is not a standalone supporter among the industry. The International Pop Overthrow has invited Agynst to perform at their Chicago and Los Angeles conferences this year as well as calling them ‘one of the most exciting acts to perform at the conferences’. In addition, Millennium Music selected Agynst for their Millennium Music Sampler cd in response to the sales of the debut. All in all, the hard work and songs are beginning to pay off for the four guys from sleepy Summerville, SC. If 2002 was a year of invention and 2003 a year of enlightenment, the young guys in Agynst are betting all their chips that 2004 will be the year of discovery. Agynst bandmates Scott Gould (vocals/rhythm guitar), brothers Drew Reindollar (guitar) Matthew Reindollar (drums) and Kenny Varner (bass) have honed their skills at local venues and studios for the better part of the last 2 years and their tenacity for great music and an engaging live show are creating a buzz among the music industry and fans alike. A melodramatic song about a lost love. Mellow versus followed by heavy guitar riffs and lyrics that stick to your brain like melted cheese on tuna fish.
