Brazil is recognized as the birthplace of the Bossa Nova and Samba styles. However, the diverse musical culture is a hot bed of even more exotic rhythms. This track, entitled, "Infin8" is based on a lesser known rhythm from the north-east called "maracatu". The strange "spring-like" intrument that you hear on the right channel is called a "Berimbau" or musical bow. The berimbau is constructed from a hallow gourd and a long pole. A metal wire bows from the top to the base of the pole, which is connected to the hallow gourd. The gourd is held against the abdomen to add resonance or vibrato, and the wire is hit with a stick to create the sound. The hand with the stick also holds a shaker filled with beans, which serves as a rattle. The player also uses an small stone that is pressed against the wire to add muting or counter rhythms. Traditionally, used to accompany the dancing martial art of capoeira, the berimbau is being incporporated into many facets of Brazilian music. |

Late one evening, a dear friend Sylvia (last name withheld) confided the account of her personal rape incident. She described the attack in chilling detail and sent me shivers as she recounted how the voice of her intuition saved her life. She revealed how in that unholy space of terror and violation, a quiet voice in her head offered a simple sentence... it was this phrase she repeated just once that literally sent the rapist recoiling into the dark and most likely saved her life. It was most unsettling to learn that this attack occurred right in her own home. The police later discovered that the perpetrator had been in her house numerous times, either while she slept or while she was away. Upon hearing this amazing tale of survival, I reflected on the lyrics Tori Amos confessed in her song, Me and a Gun. I remembered the first time I met Tori, how tiny she was... as a man, I wondered how another could abuse his size and strength in such a selfishly violent act, just to get off. To this day, I remain a humble witness to the power of these two reconciliatory survivors. The song, "Liquid Voices" breathes in their tribute... Jeff Young, October 2002 |
