Glenn Howland hails from Montpelier, Vermont, the center of the known universe and a place where steel string guitars generally seem to rule. The Treeline String Band is a diversion into solo and small group acoustic instrumentation and vocals, experimenting in a ragtimey bluish gospelly swing type folkie acoustic style, contaminated with a healthy dose of bluegrass, western swing, neo-balladism and occasional treks into uncharted territories.
Major musical influences -- Well, hundreds, I suppose. Start off with Chet Atkins, Leo Kottke, Martin Taylor, Preston Reed, Ed Gerhard, Michael Hedges, Phil Keaggy, Tony Rice, Big Bill Broonzy, David Bromberg, Martin Simpson, David Grisman... and go from there. I began playing acoustic guitar back in 1970 or so and it seems I've been permanently afflicted with the thing. Thank God for that.

Two guitars have at it in this fiddle tune. Maybe next time we'll have a fiddle, too... |
