This project began nearly 20 years ago when a youth choir was organized at the church in which I served. Disillusionment over the available children’s literature soon led me to begin writing for the choir myself. The objective was simple – draw out the meaning of Bible passages in a lyric/story were the children would truly learn and understand the content of the message. Once they learned a song, taught by rote over successive weeks, the children knew what the lesson was and therefore sang with conviction! Simple tunes led to solo parts, skits, costumes, props and lots of fun. As time passed, however, the inevitable occurred – those children grew up! The choir dissolved, I soon moved on (and away) and that was the end. Well, obviously, something happened - and that at regular intervals (about every 6 months), my wife, Carol (CJ), would ask me, “When are you going to put out those songs?” For the first dozen years or so of these periodic reminders, I was dismissive, knowing the conceptual transformation that would have to take place, and in addition, that (shudder) I would have to sing! Slowly though, the vision came into focus: finding the perfect singer, Jimmy, for all the two voice banter that would be necessary; using the jazz trio accompaniment, and finding all the right people to share the vision. Many of the “old chestnuts” are included, as well as new songs written for this project, such as, “Come As A Child” written for my daughter, Charie’ (9 years old when recorded). My oldest son, Joseph, Jr. (13 years) provides a trumpet solo in “I Got A Toothache” (written originally as a showcase for Jimmy). And Robbie (5 years) gives us timely instruction about “One Big Mess”.
This CD also marks the recording debut of the Joe Holt Trio, making this album multi-facited and (I hope) an artistic offering to all who will hear.

There are so many influences on our children. Some good, many bad. This song reminds us that Christ wants us to come to him as a child. With the innocence they bear and the willingness they so often show. God doesn't care about how we look or dress. |
