One day, when the stakes got too high and the air too stale, I split the
(mini)apple and headed west. All night I drove, my expectations growing
more and more with each passing border or time zone. Anything was an
excuse. I stopped when I hit the left coast and promptly burned all the
material Lee "Scratch" Perry-style, knowing the big leaguers would see
through it or surmise that it would have to go.
I took stock. Entertained delusions over tall beers. Knew then that the
standard was shifting sands, at best. But after viewing and considering
the thumbnail sketches, I thought it appropriate to proceed and that
perhaps caution wouldn't be exercised.
With the help of some key people, the thing took shape. It was just as
quickly lost-- a sound gone totally dead immediately after sounding.
Diligent reconstruction has so far yielded some results, as evidenced by
the slow mosaic you have here. The experiments were legendary. Our
drummer swelled up like John Cusack in that atomic bomb flick. The walls
were turned fluorescent orange. Everybody was guilty.
Absente reo: in absence of the accused, as in "I give you this on the
defendant's behalf."
