The main feature of this song is a live uncut performance of myself playing the gyil in Buffalo, NY on 6/7/01, with my band Monatomic. The gyil is an African xylophone instrument from Ghana, made of the Liga tree with gourd resonators containing spider egg casings, giving the instrument a "buzz" sound. The gyil is tuned to a G pentatonic scale, which fits perfectly with the samples from this contest. I layered some drums and bass underneath to emphasize the melodic bass lines of the gyil, and give a strong rhythmic accompianment to the piece.

Total Floyd influenced, this piece is all my own stuff on guitar, bass, keys, and drums. Slow trippy opening vamp groove at 110 BPM, hits in with a D major progression for the verse to a G major bridge, then flowing into an ambient section. Climbs up to a soaring D major again w/ guitar solo, kicking into minor for the chorus. Major climb to end, with a recapitulation of the opening theme. |

This is a quick gyil piece I wrote (see Dagara Gyil for synopsis of instrument). One take for the head, one take for the solo. Added Agbeve rhythm with live djembe and kaganu drum loops, bells, shaker, and the berimbau loop. Mene Sika is African for "I have no money", which aptly applies right now.
