Lilly Hulsey, My Grandma, was born in 1917 in the
newly formed state of Oklahoma. When she was 20 she
saved up and bought a baby grand piano which
still sits in my living room. She played for churches
and even during the great depression worked as a
musician for the WPO. She played bars, and clubs,
pizza joints and dives for years. She met her husband
who was a guitar/bassist/fiddle player. Even after
he died she put her three kids thru college playing
the piano. Grandma playing piano was all I knew when
I was growing up. I grew up in all those honky tonks
pizza joints and so on, sitting in the corner booth
listening, helping set up, tear down. I often fell
asleep listening to her play. When she made this recording
she was in her 60's! When she was younger, I'm sure
she was even more incredible. Even when she died at
the age of 77 she was still a fantastic musician
and now I have helped her music to reach beyond the
Oklahoma music scene, which forgot about her a long
time ago. I just hope that this music never is forgotten
and memorys of musicians like my Grandma are never forgotten.
Grandma, now the world can hear you play, even from
the afterlife. We always knew you could have been
famous. In our minds you were a superstar. I hope that
there are those out there in the world who remember
this music and love it still. And Im glad to introduce
you to my Granny, THE LAST OF THE RED HOT MAMA'S!
