I wrote this piece the old fashion way... scribbling one note at a time. Well, ok, one mouse click at a time but it still took an entire week in August 2002.
I originally intended to write a string quartet but the climax grew to eight parts to achieve the fullness and depth that I wanted (everybody double up).
If you listen closely, you can hear the church bells I overlayed with the music in places. These bells have been ringing for about 800 years in a little community church bell tower in Sweden. I have yet to decide if this is complementary or just annoying.
While I intend to eventually update this with "better" string instruments as opposed to the slightly cheesey synthesizer sound I used, I am nevertheless posting it as a work in progress. Enjoy. |

To be honest, I'm not particularly proud of this composition because it seems to lack "cohesion", but since I spent the time on it...

I developed this little idea in 1995 to capture the mood of separation from a close friend and the desire to restore the relationship. For the most part, it is written in 6/8 (incidentally, one of my favorite time signatures) and grouped into traditional 8 bar phrases. The exception is that the second measure in the phrase has 7 beats, divided into 3 + 4. As difficult as it is to get a complete and clean recording, this turned out to be a rare one-take event. Actually, to be completely honest, I recorded it more times than I can remember (a number much greater than 50 and beyond the limit of my patience) and consequently kept the first recording. |
