Saturnalia Trio / Quartet was founded in 1996 by Daniel Crommie (vocals, dulcimers, mandolin, flutes, misc.) and Leslie Gray (violin & viola). Mixing original songs and medieval folk tunes with a dizzying assortment of exotic instruments and textures is the hallmark of this adventurous band. The first album (which featured Jamie Haggerty on percussion) "Salterello, Psaltery and song" ( released in 1997) garnered a fine review in Dirty Linen who called it "A fun, well-played collection". The next album (featuring percussionist Bruce Gelman) "The Juturna Codex" (released in 2000) got a rave review from Chaos Realm who opined "The Juturna Codex is a CD filled with lush atmosphere, haunting and darkly captivating, powerful and packed with substance". Now joined by Paul Evans (percussion) and Elizabeth Nicholson (vocals & Celtic harp) the band recorded their third and most accessible effort "Mercury Rising" (released in 2002), which expanded on the themes introduced on the previous albums - resulting in a balanced and engaging set marked by a wider scope of lyric content - both ancient and thoroughly contemporary. In 2002, with harpist Elizabeth Nicholson's departure the group started work on a new album, and with the forthcoming "Of Mosaic & Muse" album near completion in Spring 2003 came word that Leslie Gray was to become a mother - prompting a frantic and thankfully fruitful search for a stand-in, fiddler Lauren McKenzie.
