I’ve understood for some time that my songs, musically, but especially lyrically, have been of a rather challenging breed. Songs that are not for most. Songs that have a wont to go over heads. And sometimes trampled under feet.
I’ve understood this and have been coached this by promoters and agents and critics and the music industry in general. All with the best intentions and, bless ‘em, with true desire for me to "hit it big." To those well meaning souls I say, thank you but no thank you.
My market will always be for the intellectually disenfranchised. Untenured College Professors biding their time, hoping to someday pursue their studies of some obscure 18th century French essayist. The over educated, under-medicated nurse on the psych ward trying to steal time between the shriekers and the clappers. The intense, meticulous artist working at the family law firm, using her pencil deep into the night to study the reasons behind the wrinkles in the brow of her subjects. Theological scholars that recognize that Jesus and Buddha and Muhammad and even Edgar Cayce were breathing the same wisdom. The teenage student in their first bout with abstract thought and wrestling with the shallowness and the loneliness of the "Big Picture." Writers and readers and sowers and reapers. The outsiders looking in. The insiders looking out. The intellectually restless. The emotional voyager. Contemplative peripatetics.
These cognition nomads are whom I will continue to hone my craft for. To let them know they are not alone. My music is my flag. My beacon. You are not alone.
And I thank you for the company.

We have all been the rubble. Maybe it's vulnerability, shared loneliness, or waking with someone you don't love. |
