and i raced to the western shore, feeling pursuit like a second skin.
under the hood the only mechanical defiance of betrayal. over one last crest,
but there is no shoreline here. not anymore. cold walls climb straight up into
the heavens. impenetrable. unfeeling. unmoving.
stopped there dead in my tracks i turned to watch my pursuers close me in, not
at all unlike the odds in a fox hunt. a semicircle around me closing like a steel
clamp. spaces between bodies became cracks became one body. i could not distinguish
between one and the next. and in their eyes i saw electricity, the first remove from
earth. and on their faces the blank expressions of those bought and sold far too many
times to recognize the difference anymore. the consumate consumers.
i closed my eyes and sank to the ground, letting the icy stiff fingers begin their work.
