This highly-rated all-woodwind ensemble has been performing their eclectic mixture of styles in the Washington, D.C. area since 1984. Their 1998 release, "This'n'That" (on Global View Records) features many unique originals, as well as quirky arrangements of tunes by a diverse selection of artists - from Dizzy Gillespie and John Coltrane to The Beatles and Talking Heads. You'll find several tunes from this recording and their debut CD, "Very Scary", below - including "Windmills", which was the #1 SONG in the MP3.com "General Jazz" category in Febuary of 2001!
Their newest CD, "A Touch of Evil" was just released on Mapleshade Records. Recorded during the same time period as "This'n'That" (again using Mapleshade's minimalist/audiophile, direct to 2-track technique), it has the same incredibly clear, lifelike sound and dynamic range. However, unlike previous projects, this time Windmill is performing with several other talented and empathetic musicians, in a variety of configurations - and using a much looser, more exploratory approach. All Windmill CD's are available online at GVR's order page. Hope you enjoy the music! "Their joy in playing explodes in every measure." - Le Jazz; "Tight riff-heavy arrangements, carefully woven contrapuntal lines, a propulsive sense of rhythm, and cleanly articulated concise solos." - Cadence Magazine; "Craft, wit, imagination and a feeling for tradition...like the World Saxophone Quartet meets Lester Bowie" - the Washington Post; "Stirring music, surprisingly accessible" - CD Review Windmill sheet music now available online! Originals as well as unique arrangements of "God Bless the Child" (A bluesy version of the Billie Holiday ballad, as recorded on "Very Scary"), "Heartbreak Hotel" (Windmill does Elvis Presley!), "My Girl" (The Motown classic), "Why Do Fools Fall in Love?" (A doo-wop style oldie), and "Here, There and Everywhere" (A bossa-nova style arrangement of the Beatles classic). Click here: Windmill Sheet Music. (Free RealAudio or MP3 versions of these tunes are also available) Be sure to check out these two other hot groups - featuring the dynamic and emotional playing of saxophonist CLAYTON ENGLAR: Clayton Englar and Equinox and Thursday Group.
